Mosquito bites are ideally the most common irritations we face. From tiny toddlers to retired adults, they are not only an annoyance, but also can cause some serious damage. Itchiness, rashes, skin infections and even deadly diseases like dengue or malaria are potential harms that can be done. Well, here are some home remedies for dealing with them:
Onion or garlic –
These underground-grown vegetables can be used as a before or after treatment fr mosquito bites. Mash them and apply to the affected area. They reduce itchiness and soothe the swelling. Moreover, as a ‘before’ treatment, their strong aroma fend off mosquitoes and other insects. As an ‘after’ apply the crushed remedy to the affected area and wash off after a few minutes.
Salt has anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties. Mix table salt and a little water and apply the paste to the bite. Alternately, you could mix seasoning salt, garlic salt and water in equal amounts and apply the paste to the bite. It may burn for a while but gives you relief soon after. You can even swim in salt water if you live near a beach.
Lemons have natural anaesthetic properties. Halve a lemon and rub the inside of one half onto the bite, which relieves you of itchiness. You may even try to rub the rind of the lemon. Lemon juice helps reduce the chances of getting an infection. You can even mix lemon juice with crushed basil to get a solution.
Aloe Vera –
Aloe Vera diminishes itching, swelling and pain and even quickens the recovery. You simply have to cool the gel of the plant in the refrigerator for 10-15 minutes and then apply directly to the affected area.
Baking Soda –
Baking soda is alkaline in nature and brings down the pH of the skin once in contact with it; and reduces itchiness and gives relief. Add a teaspoon of baking soda to a glass of water. Dip a cloth in it and wrap the cloth around your hand for 10-20 minutes. You may even make a paste out of baking soda and witch hazel and apply it to the bite for 10 minutes and wash off with lukewarm water.
Ice numbs the itchiness of the bite. Use an icepack or even ice wrapped around a wash cloth over the bite for 10-15 minutes. Experience the relief from the itchiness and swelling. If you don’t have ice let your hand stay under cold, running water. You may even choose to hold a frozen or cool vegetable over it to feel relief.
Well, those were a few effective tips to relieve mosquito bites. Get rid of them in an instant. You may even take an aspirin, rub alcohol on it or even apply peppermint toothpaste over the bite to experience relief. So no more worries about mosquito bites. Mosquitoes will only come for your blood if they can smell it. Use a mosquito repellent to conceal that smell and guard yourself.
Moths are, to many people, mistaken as a butterfly and are merely shooed out of the house. But what people don’t realize is that simply getting them out of your house is not going to help. They may have planted eggs already and that is not good. Your clothes, food and a lot more gets deteriorated, which by extension can affect you. So here are some tips to completely keep your house free from moths.
Moth eggs are already present and to get them out, you must first vacuum the place. The larvae can easily be hidden under furniture, in cabinets, under the carpets etc. So thoroughly vacuum the place. Use crevice extensions for the cabinets. Have your clothes washed thoroughly or even dry cleaned.
Cinnamon sticks –
Cinnamon sticks are useful to repel moths from clothes. They can be used for carpets and other such items, but fair warning, they reek of cinnamon. Yes, you’ll have to wash them with great effort to get the cinnamon scent off of the clothes. Nevertheless, they do kill moths.
Cedar is very effective for keeping moths at bay. The fragrance is very appealing and it keeps those pests away. You can buy the wood and have a carpenter cut it up into smaller components. Make sure to get all the sap drained out though, or lese it will just leak onto and stain your precious clothes. You may try for cedar products – like a spray of sorts – but it is not as effective.
Cloves are effective spices to keep moths out of your house. You can put some in your masala cabinets or even on clothes to keep those insects away. But remember to fully wash your clothes after that to keep the aroma of cloves off of your clothes.
Lavender buds –
Lavender buds are definitely the best way to keep moths out of your home as they have a much more pleasant fragrance than the spices, cloves or cinnamon. Plus, many people have found that there have been no signs or traces of moths.
Pheromone Moth traps –
You can always try out these sophisticated and efficient traps. They are available at chemists usually. They attract the moths specifically, so buy based on what moths have infested your home. You can buy them for the ones that have infested your clothing or the ones in your kitchen. Different pheromones attract different species, so buy accordingly.
Extreme temperatures kill the insects –
The technique is quite good. Take the infected clothing and wrap it in a plastic bag and put it in the refrigerator, taking out all the air. Keep it in there for at least 4 days and before you open it again, let it come to room temperature. You’ll find that the cold will have killed the larvae and pupae. Alternately, you can even use an iron and iron the clothes out. The heat will also terminate those insects.

Surplus secretion of melanin in the skin, lack of sleep, overexposure to the sun, vitamin insufficiencies, distress, imbalance of hormones, pregnancy are factors that cause dark spots, patches and discolouration of skin. And we know how embarrassing it feels when it is clearly visible. It brings your self-esteem to the level of a cockroach’s sense of sight. Now while you may opt for getting laser treatments or facial peels done – which are rather expensive and probably harmful, why not try out simple home remedies first? Try the simpler steps before you take a big leap. Here are some Natural solutions to getting rid of dark spots:
By using an oatmeal mask, you can eliminate dead skin cells and dark spots on your face and neck. It exfoliates your skin. So to make the mask/paste, mill half a cup of rolled oats. Then add 3-4 tablespoons of lime juice to make it into a paste. Rub it onto your face and let it dry. Rinse it off with warm water. Do this once or twice per week. Take note that if the paste doesn’t come off easily, wet a washcloth with warm water and finish the job.
Potatoes can be used to rid you of dark spots. You can choose to cut a slice and leave it on the specific area for a couple of minutes and then wash off with lukewarm water. The second option would be to mix grated potato and honey to make a mask. A fruit that a few people have had success with for reducing dark spots is the tomato.
Lime Juice –
Limes which are so common and you get them at very cheap prices are known to diminish dark spots as they have Vitamin C present in them. That is why they’ve been infused in soaps, face wash and many other hygienic and skin care products. Take a cotton ball and dab some lime juice on it and apply over affected area. For those with sensitive or delicate skin, dilute the lime juice with honey, rosewater or regular water. Let it dry and wash it off with water. Carry on with this technique for at least two weeks.
While some people love to have an almond before they begin their day – either school or work – almond is known to have great benefits on your skin as well. Take up to ten almonds and soak them in milk overnight, peeling off their skin the next day. Add half a teaspoon of honey and one teaspoon of sandalwood powder to it and mix it into a fine cream. Apply it onto your face for about 30 minutes and then rinse it off.
Use a mixture of buttermilk to get rid of blemishes and dark spots. Mix four teaspoons of buttermilk and two of fresh tomato juice and apply and wash off after 15 minutes. If you don’t have buttermilk, you can use regular milk, as the lactic acid slowly and steadily reduces pigmentation and brightens your skin tone and complexion altogether. For regular milk (add honey if you want), dab it on a cotton ball and leave it on for 10 minutes. For both cases, do it twice a day for 5-6 weeks.
Mix sandalwood powder, rosewater (you may use either milk/honey if you don’t have rosewater) and glycerine to get a thick paste. Rub it onto the affected regions and leave it on for a couple of minutes and rinse off with lukewarm water. Do this once a day.
