What is Meditation
Despite this term being very popular, many of us do not know what meditation is. People often take meditation as concentration and that we meditate when we imagine something that gives us happiness. They perceive meditation as resting your mind, not thinking at all, which is quite a difficult task and requires a lot of effort. Meditation means awareness. Anything you do with awareness is termed as meditation. It is defined as a state of mind where the mind is free of any scattered thoughts other patterns. Excessive and stress producing activity is reduced. The word – meditation, is derived from two Latin words: meditari (to think, to exercise the mind) and mederi (to heal). Its Sanskrit derivation ‘medha’ means wisdom.
Being in a state of thoughtless awareness, meditation enables one to focus on the present situation rather than thinking about the past or the future. Meditation is seen by many researchers as a way to reduce your stress. While meditating, you do not think about the things that disturb you. Meditation calms you and soothes you. Researchers have also showed that meditating regularly reduces your visits to the physician. Meditation is an effective form of reducing your stress and improving the quality of your life thus reducing your healthcare costs. Meditation is an effortless activity wherein your mind enters the state of ‘thoughtless awareness’ without reducing alertness and effectiveness.
When we look at toddlers, we see no worried lines on their faces; they are not even worried about their meal and hold no grudges against anyone; even if you take away their favorite toy from them, they will cry for some time and it will be soon forgotten. They are carefree and are in the present moment, unpretentious and are happy. Imagine if we could be like them? Meditation will help you to live in the moment wherein we return to our childlike innocence and simplicity in complete awareness. Meditation also helps you to improve the quality of your work because your mind is not preoccupied with something. Some of the benefits of meditation are as follows:
- Lowers your blood pressure and improves your immune system
- Increase your energy level
- Decreases any tension related pain
- It improves your mood and behavior
- It brings peace of mind and improves your emotional stability
