What is NLP?
Neuro-linguistic programming also known as NLP was created by Richard Bandler and John Grinder in California, United States in the 1970s. It is a name that encompasses the three components that influence in producing human experience: neurology, language and programming. Neurology regulates the way or body functions, language determine the way we communicate with each other and our programming determines the kinds of model that we create of the world. Neuro-linguistic programming describes the fundamental relation between the mind (neuro) and the language (linguistic) and their interplay and how it affects our body and behavior (Programming).
NLP is a multi-dimensional process because it involves the development of behavioral competence and flexibility, but it also involves strategic thinking and understanding the mental and cognitive reasons behind behavior. It provides you skills for the development of individual excellence and tells you about empowering beliefs of human beings what communication is all about. At the other level, NLP is about self discovery and what a human being is capable of. It also provides a framework to understand the spiritual side of a human experience that reaches beyond us. It is not only about competence and excellence, but also about wisdom and vision.
NLP is founded on two presuppositions:
- As human beings, you never know what reality is. Reality for us is a subjective concept as our perception about reality is different from others. We experience this world and respond to it using our sensory perceptions. It is our neuro-linguistic program that determines how we behave and gives meaning to those behaviors and not reality. Generally, it is not reality that empowers us but our perception or map of reality.
- Systematic processes take place within a human being and between human beings and their environment. Our bodies, surrondings and our universe form a complex system all of which interacts with each other thus mutually influencing each other. It is not possible to isolate any one part of the system.
NLP finds its application in psychotherapy as it shares a similar core and assumptions as with psychotherapy. It also helps in curing mental disorder as it helps you to understand the underlying reasons of the behavior of the person. Although the core techniques of NLP were therapeutic in nature originally, its generality has enabled its application in other fields also. NLP finds its applications in persuasion, sales, negotiation, management training, sports, teaching coaching, team building and public speaking.
NLP improves the quality of your life. It teaches us how to communicate very effectively with yourself and with others. It is designed to help people experience personal freedom in the way they think, feel and behave. NLP helps you to get you from where you are to where you want to go much effectively. It is a desire to know what kind of communications influence others and the things that are worth knowing; to look at life as a rare opportunity to learn and grow. It teaches you about human behavior and also manages your behavior in order to succeed by understanding the behavior of others. It has evolved as an innovative technology to organize information and perception.
